Botox Side Effects

Botox side effectsGiven its popularity it would be easy for us to become complacent about the potential risks involved with Botox.

Whilst side effects can occur, Botox is generally considered to be an extremely safe procedure which benefits hundreds of thousands of people each year. The good thing about any Botox side effects is that they are only temporary, as Botox only ever stays in the body for a maximum of 6 months.

For more information on how long Botox lasts you can read the following guide: How long does the effects of Botox last?

The following lists the potential side effects of Botox:

  • Symptoms associated with the injection site: Redness, pain and swelling at the site of the injection are all relatively common side effects of Botox. These are generally minor and can be easily concealed with make-up. In most cases these effects will wear off after a few days.
  • Headaches: Some people experience headaches following Botox but these are generally short lasting and can be treated with painkillers. You can read more about this at the following blog post: Can Botox cause headaches?
  • Sickness and flu symptoms: These symptoms are rare and again short lasting. If these symptoms do occur you should consult with your practitioner so they can advise you on any potential medication that could help.
  • Double vision/ turn in the eye: This is extremely rare and can occur when Botox is used to treat problems around the eyes. If the Botox migrates to affect the muscles within the eyes, double vision can occur. If you do experience double vision it can be corrected with glasses and as with all Botox side effects it will not be permanent.
  • Eye lid drooping: This can occur if the muscles that control the eyelids are affected. This can be treated with eye drops and it generally wears off without treatment within about 2 weeks.
  • Disappointing results: Occasionally the results of Botox are not as good as you would expect. Read the following blog post for more information on this: Does Botox work on everyone?
  • Frozen look: If too much Botox is injected it can immobilise your face too much, giving an unnatural appearance. As well as this, parts of your face that you don't want immobilised such as your lips may also be affected which again does not look natural. An experienced practitioner will be very wary of over injecting and it is always better to under inject as more can be added later if required.
  • Facial pain: Some people experience discomfort around the injection site but this typically wears off within one week.
  • Heartburn / indigestion: This can occur with some people and your practitioner can recommend you the appropriate medication.
  • Dry mouth: This wears off quickly and very rarely causes a problem.

Although there are potential side effects as seen above, the vast majority of people experience no problems whatsoever. If you are unfortunate and suffer one of the more serious complications they can generally be treated by an experienced practitioner and if not, the effects are only temporary.

For most people any side effects that do occur are generally minor and hardly noticeable. If you do experience side effects it is important that you inform your practitioner as they may decide to reduce your dosage should you have the procedure repeated. If the side effects are more serious you may be advised to seek an alternative treatment such as dermal fillers.

In summary, Botox is an extremely safe cosmetic procedure that is likely to significantly improve your appearance. Providing you are treated by a fully trained practitioner you are unlikely to experience any problems whatsoever.
