Sclerotherapy is a simple and highly successful treatment for removing thread veins (also called spider veins) giving an 80–90% improvement in appearance for most people.
Sclerotherapy can be carried out on both men and women and on any part of the body. Sclerotherapy involves the use of a tiny needle to inject a chemical into the thread veins which causes it to collapse (damages the vessel wall). This collapsed vein will then be naturally absorbed by the body over a period of about 3 months. This means it will no longer be visible and therefore the cosmetic appearance is improved.
Although the treated veins themselves will never grow back, new veins in the same area can return which may need a repeat treatment. The treatment itself typically takes around 30 minutes depending on the size of the treated area and you will be able to return to work/normal activities immediately afterwards.
How Much Does Sclerotherapy Cost?
The cost of sclerotherapy depends on various factors and they are listed below:
The size of the area being treated: Larger areas will require more treatment time which will increase the cost.
Amount of thread veins: Some people will have a higher density of thread veins in a given area which will require more treatment and therefore cost more.
How many treatments you require: Some people will require more repeat treatments than others. This will depend on how well you respond to the treatment.
The clinic: A clinic with a good reputation for sclerotherapy is likely to charge more.
Clinician/practitioner: Sclerotherapy cost is likely to be higher if your clinician is highly experienced.
Although prices will vary, the typical cost for a one hour treatment session will be between £150 and £300. On average, each area being treated needs around 3 - 4 repeat procedures which you will need to take into consideration when calculating the total price.
How Successful is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is widely regarded as the best treatment of thread veins and dramatically improves the appearance of the treated skin. Most people notice a minimum improvement of 80% but for some people pretty much all the veins will be removed. It normally takes around 1 month before you will see any reduction in the thread veins and you will need to wait at least 3 months to see the full effects.
How Many Sclerotherapy Treatments Will I Need?
This will depend on how bad your thread veins are and on how well you respond to the treatment. Typically 2 – 3 treatment sessions are required for every area that is being treated. You will need to wait at least 4 weeks between treatments.
Is Sclerotherapy Painful?
The needles are very fine and so the discomfort is only mild. Some people report a slight burning feeling for a few seconds after the injection is made.
Sclerotherapy Side Effects:
Side effects are rare and most people report no problems at all following the treatment. There are however certain side effects that can occur and they are as follows:
Blisters: These normally only last a few days.
Pigmentation: This is rare.
Swelling and bruising: This normally settles down after a few days.
