Botox For Sweating

Botox for sweating

Sweating is a normal physiological response whose main function is to cool us down when we overheat. For certain individuals however, excessive sweating can be a major problem and may occur constantly regardless of the temperature. Excessive sweating can affect the whole body but it is most commonly associated with the arm pits, feet and hands.

The condition can lead to reduced self-confidence / self-esteem and can greatly affect a person's life. The cause of sweating varies for different individuals with the most common reasons being stress or overheating. For some people however the sweating is a constant menace without any obvious triggers or causes.

Although Botox is generally associated with cosmetic treatments it can also be used to treat people who suffer from excessive sweating. Excessive sweating, which has the medical name Hyperhidrosis is quite a common problem with a prevalence of around 2% of the population.

The reason we sweat is because our sweat glands receive a message from the nerves that supply them which triggers off this physiological response. If you suffer from excessive sweating then these messages are being sent too frequently to the sweat glands. Often such people will sweat without the normal stimulus required for sweating such as heat or stress

How Does Botox Treat Sweating?

Botox injections work by inhibiting the nerves in the skin that control our sweating. These nerves send the signal to our sweat glands to trigger them to start sweating. By stopping this signal you will effectively stop the glands from producing sweat. Botox injections can be used to treat any problem areas of the body and the results are equally effective on both men and women.

What Happens During The Procedure?

  • The Botox procedure is similar to that for cosmetic purposes only that generally more injections are required.
  • The Botox is injected into approximately 10 to 15 places spread evenly over the affected area. The procedure will normally take around 30 minutes in total but this could be longer if more than one area is being treated.

How Effective is The Treatment?

The Botox procedure will not stop the sweating completely but it can reduce it by up to 80% which is likely to have a significant improvement on the quality of your life. Although there is variation between individuals, the effects of Botox will typically last for around 6 months. After this time you will need to have the procedure repeated to ensure that the effects are maintained.

How Quickly Will I See Results?

This does differ between individuals but most people will notice a reduction in sweating within 1 week of first having the treatment.

What is The Cost of The Treatment?

The price of the treatment will vary dependent on which area is to be treated and the extent of your sweating. Under arm treatment will typically cost around £500 per treatment. You can read more about pricing at the following link: Botox prices guide
