Botox For Migraines

Chronic migraine affects approximately 700,000 in the UK and for some people the condition can be debilitating and significantly reduce the quality of their life. The cause of migraines varies from one individual to another and there are various triggers ranging from bright lights to eating certain foods.

Botox is normally used for cosmetic purposes to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and frown lines of the face. It was as a result of treating such people that this additional benefit of Botox was discovered. A percentage of people being treated with Botox found their migraines, as well as their wrinkles had reduced! Exactly how Botox reduces migraines is not fully understood but it is thought that is linked to the blocking of pain signals.

There are some discrepancies in the studies that assess how effective Botox is at reducing migraines but it is definitely true that for some people the results are beneficial. For some people migraines can be reduced by as much as 50% which is certainly significant. It is also important to mention here that for a small percentage (10%) of people Botox injections may actually lead to an increase in migraines.

Botox for migraines can be treated under the NHS providing the migraines have been classified as being chronic. The definition of chronic migraines is that the person in question has to have a headache on more than 15 days of each month, at least eight of which are migraines. During the procedure Botox injections are administered into known trigger points in both the head and neck. The Botox procedure is then repeated every 3 or 6 months depending on the severity of the migraines.

Although Botox can be used to treat anybody who suffers from migraines, it can only be claimed on the NHS if they are classified as chronic migraines.
