Laser eye surgery can correct the 3 main types of prescriptions which are long-sightedness, short-sightedness and astigmatism. There are 2 main types of laser eye surgery which are Lasik and Lasek and whilst both are extremely effective and treating visual problems Lasik can treat a slightly larger prescription range.
Both Lasik and Lasek correct your vision in the same way, by effectively reshaping the cornea to eliminate the prescription in your glasses or contact lenses. If you are short-sighted the laser flattens the curve of your cornea whereas the opposite is true for long-sighted prescriptions.
Laser eye surgery can also treat presbyopia which describes the natural deterioration of your reading vision with age. This typically occurs in your mid-forties and up until recently was not treatable by laser eye surgery. Laser eye surgery cannot however treat a lazy eye and you are unlikely to be suitable for surgery if you have this condition. In terms of a lazy eye, laser eye surgery can give you the vision that you can currently achieve with your glasses on but no better than this. Put another way, if you can only read the very biggest letter on the eye test chart with your glasses on, then this is the best you can expect to see after laser eye surgery.
